Seven Wonders of the World - Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
This ancient city is now known as Bodrum in Turkey. Popular ancient historians Herodotus (late 5th century BC) and Dionysius were born in this city.

It is widely believed that Dorians from Peloponnese have founded the city of Halicarnassus. There are some notes from famous historians about some Carian inhabitants. Artemisia is one of the popular Queens from Halicarnassus. She has bravely defeated the enemies of Rhodes in the Battle of Salamis.

The most popular part of this city is the castle of St. Peter. This was constructed during 1400 BC using the parts of the great Mausoleum. This served as a place of refuge for all Christians during the time of crusades. Halicarnassus also had a gate called Myndos gate located on the west side, which stood hard against the Alexander's invasion during early part of 4th century BC. This gate is a part of the long wall which helped the city for a while. But eventually Alexander invaded the city. After his victory Alexander proceeded to Phrygia.
